William Fals-Stewart, Ph.D., Principal Investigator: Dr. Fals-Stewart is a clinical psychologist with current research and treatment interests that include marital and family therapy with alcohol- and drug-abusing patients, substance abuse treatment cost-outcome and cost-benefits studies, and parent skills training with substance-abusing parents. He has expanded his research to explore issues and potential intervention strategies with families that have a substance-abusing member, such as HIV, interpersonal violence, and psychosocial functioning of children living in these homes.

Dr. Fals-Stewart has authored over 170 academic journal articles and has presented the programs research findings at numerous conferences both nationally and internationally. He has been awarded more than $15 million in supported funding by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and the Alpha House Foundation.

Wendy (K.K.) Lam, Ph.D., Principal Investigator:
Dr. Lam is a licensed child/school psychologist with current research interests that include substance abuse, HIV prevention, and health disparities among high risk women, children, and families, particularly children of substance-abusing parents who are not receiving treatment. Her treatment research examines community-based family interventions for African American drug-abusing mothers and their children, as well as brief screening and interventions for substance abuse and HIV risks developed through small business partnerships. With Dr. Fals-Stewart, her work has expanded to address the psychosocial functioning of children of substance-abusing parents in treatment settings, parent skills training with substance-abusing parents in treatment, children’s exposure to parental violence, and youth and parent gender issues.

Dr. Lam has authored publications in these areas and has been invited to present research findings at numerous national and international conferences. She has been awarded more than $3 million in funding supported by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
