LEARNING SOBRIETY TOGETHER (BCT) /
BEHAVIORAL COUPLES THERAPY (LST)
Consultation and Certificate Program
Learning Sobriety Together (LST) is the umbrella term that is now used to capture not only Behavioral Couples Therapy (BCT) for alcoholism and substance abuse, but also all of its variations.
General certificate programs are available for those interested in pursuing additional training without entering a formal degree program. The Certificate Program in LST provides extensive training in a model with over 25 years of well-documented empirical support and supplements that training with doctoral-level clinical supervision from a world renowned expert in the substance abuse field.
The purpose of the Certificate Program in Learning Sobriety Together is to allow employed/experienced counselors to become officially trained and certified in LST by the leading proponents and disseminators of this approach: The Addiction and Family Research Group (AFRG). The AFRG is actively involved in the implementation and dissemination of LST in a number of clinics throughout New York State, and have given numerous presentations on LST throughout the United States and abroad.
The goals of the certificate program are to:
1) provide counselors an empirically supported model for working with drug- and alcohol-abusing couples.
2) provide a high quality, accessible learning experience for each person which allows him or her to strengthen clinical skills and better meet the needs of clients.
3) ensures a national standard of excellence in LST.
Certificate programs are beneficial to many counselors for both personal and professional advancement.
The LST Certificate Program is appropriate for any professional involved in delivering mental health services to couples and their families. The Certificate in LST is not intended as a diploma or degree that reflects the requirements of a particular governmental, private, or organizational agency. However, individuals earning the Certificate will receive an official written Certificate of Completion from the Addiction and Family Research Group, with the notarization from the leading expert in this approach, Dr. William Fals-Stewart.
Curriculum Outline
The curriculum for the BCT/LST Certificate is as follows:
Training
There are presently two primary options for training available to those wishing to learn more about LST and to use it with their clients. These are as follows:
On-Line Training: For those wishing to obtain general information and background on LST for alcoholism and drug abuse, there is an on-line training course available: Behavioral Couples Therapy in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Treatment
In-Person Trainings: The AFRG offers a one- or a two-day training on LST.
The One-Day In-Person Training is a 6-hour didactic presentation by Dr. Fals-Stewart or Dr. Klostermann on LST for alcoholism and drug abuse which uses videotaped materials to illustrate methods and techniques.
The Two-Day In-Person Training consists of 12 hours of LST training. Day 1 consists of a 6-hour didactic presentation (i.e., the same material covered in the One-Day In-Person Training). Day 2 provides a more in-depth examination of the different elements of LST (e.g., Sobriety Contracting, Relationship Enhancement) and detailed information of variations of LST for different populations and settings (e.g., Abbreviated LST, Group-Based LST, Parent Skills Training plus LST for clients who have children). Providers and programs who initially receive the one-day training can get the second day of training for a fee as noted below.
Supervision
For providers and programs that receive the two day in-person training, 24 hours of clinical supervision and case review by either Dr. Fals-Stewart or Dr. Klostermann are also available. Those who wish to receive supervision should send audio- and/or videotapes of cases for review and discussion with Drs. Fals-Stewart or Klostermann. Supervision can be done face-to-face if practical, or can be done by telephone and e-mail.
Cost
For the on-line training, the course can be taken for no credit (for free) or for 3 Continuing Education Credits at $35.00.
The cost of the In-Person One-Day training is $3000.00 plus expenses (e.g., transportation, food, lodging). The In-Person Two-Day trainings are $2500.00 per day plus expenses. The cost of the In Person Two-Day Training plus Supervision described above is $7000.00 plus expenses. For groups over 100, add $500.00 a day for each group of fifty.
